Aesculus × carnea – Ruby Horsechestnut – 5-Gallon

A very showy hybrid of the North American Red Buckeye (A. pavia) and the European Horsechestnut (A. hippocastanum). The reddish-pink (‘Fort McNair) or reddish (‘Briotti’) flowers have a yellow throat and like those of Red Buckeye are particularly attractive to Ruby-throated Hummingbirds. While the foliage of this variety is resistant to foliar problems (leaf scorch and dropping of foliage), it is not immune – they plague all members of the group. Make sure you provide a site with a little afternoon shade and moist soil – even established trees appreciate being watered during extreme droughts.
