Chelone lyonii ‘Hot Lips’ – Pink Turtlehead

Deep pink flowers that resemble the head of a turtle appear in clusters on tall stems.  They provide a nice addition of color for the shady or moist garden in late Summer. Combine with Joe-Pye Weed, ferns, Obedient Plant and Helen’s Flower. It is also very happy along the bank of a pond with Blue Flag Iris, Canadian Burnet and Great Blue Lobelia. A favorite plant of bumblebees which are the only pollinators strong enough to push open the flower to get at the pollen and nectar inside. Once in a while a hummingbird will use its long beak to get nectar without having to open the flower.
