Fothergilla major – Mountain Witchalder – 2-Gallon

$39.00

Also known as Mountain Witch-alder, reflecting its membership in the Hamamelidaceae, the plant family in which Witch-hazel is the most well-known member. This is a forest understory shrub of mountain cliffs and glades in the southern Appalachians. Give it a little sun though and it puts on a spectacular show, from the honey-sweet flower clusters in Spring to the vibrant display of Fall foliage, a cacophony of apricot, orange, maroon and crimson. This is a slow but determined spreader so give it some room else it will overwhelm shorter neighbors. It’s also likely to be taller than the commonly available hybrid ‘Mt Airy’.
