Fragaria ‘Cavendish’ – June-bearing Strawberry

A recent release from the Kentville Research Station at Nova Scotia, this early midseason variety is the result of a cross between two varieties known for their winter hardiness and attractive, large fruit. It produces high yields that ripen over a long growing season with excellent flavor and top-notch fruit quality. ‘Cavendish’ is cold-hardy throughout the Catskills. As a final bonus, it’s highly resistant to red stele and somewhat resistant to verticillium wilt. All things considered simply one of the best of the newer varieties of strawberries.

  • Strawberries require 6-10 hours a day of direct sunlight.
  • They will do best in a sandy loam soil and adding some aged manure and/or compost before planting is recommended.  Mulch with chopped straw, leaves or shredded wood.
  • The soil pH should be between 5.5 and 7.
  • Strawberries need well-drained conditions so raised beds or containers are a good option.
