Ilex opaca ‘Satyr Hill’ – Female American Holly

Primarily an understory tree of the Atlantic coastal plain, American Holly can be grown in the Catskills if given protection from winter sun and dessicating winds. When grown in full sun it will become a dense pyramidal-shaped tree. In a shadier spot it will become loose and irregular in form. ‘Satyr Hil’l has been selected for its tortoise-shaped leaves and large red fruits. A nearby male pollinator is necessary for berry production. Fairly deer-resistant.
