Lindera benzoin aka spicebush is a shrub in the laurel family. Grows in the understory in moist, rich woods. A good substitute for sterile, overused, non-native forsythia -if your soil is not too dry.

Spicebush is a favorite food plant of two the spicebush swallowtail (Papilo troilus)and the promethea silkmoth (Callosamia promethea). It also supports the caterpillars of the cynthai moth, eastern tiger swallowtail, imperial moth and the tulip tree beauty moth.

Beautiful fall color with red berries.
