Picea rubens – Red Spruce – 3-Quart

If you climb to the highest elevations of the Catskills you’ll find yourself in an evergreen forest of Spruce and Fir. The Spruce species is this one, Red Spruce. If you’re interested in creating a backyard landscape that evokes a Catskill mountaintop you’ll have a difficult time finding Red Spruce – among natives, only White Spruce and Colorado Blue Spruce are generally available. Provide these young saplings with a moist, cool soil and a lot of sun and they will grow fairly quickly into a pyramidal tree that deer won’t touch and in which songbirds will be likely to nest.
