Purplish-green foliage and reddish-purple stems add an ornamental touch to this extremely tough and adaptable small tree or large shrub. Will grow anywhere except a poorly drained, permanently moist site. All sumacs have showy fall foliage – that of Flameleaf Sumac is perhaps the best, with leaves taking on hues that range from crimson to maroon. A great choice for a wildlife hedgerow – the greenish-yellow flowers are not showy but are nectar-rich and attractive to a variety of insects. Fruits on female trees are taken by birds in winter.
