The black raspberry is a native American fruit found growing in the wild from New England to the Carolinas. Beginning in 1927 The New York State Agricultural Experiment Station at Geneva began releasing improved varieties. ‘Jewel’, released in 1957, is probably their most successful introduction.  It produces excellent yields of superb quality berries. Fruit are large, glossy black with good flavor. ‘Jewel’ is not as susceptible to disease as other black raspberry varieties. It will grow to 7 feet tall – best to pinch back tips when they reach 4-5 feet in the summer.
